Kyneton Town Square

Developing a vibrant connected town square for Kyneton and district residents has been a major focus for the Co-Op since the Old Primary School buildings were saved in 2018.

A town square vision evolved out of that hard-won success in keeping the historic Kyneton Primary School complex in public ownership. The school site includes the well-known heritage-listed 1850’s bluestone building and a 1980’s cream brick structure offering multi-use opportunities. These buildings are centrally located in town and, together with the surrounding spaces could provide residents with an exceptional community focal point comprised of both indoor and outdoor facilities.

Supported by $12 million in government funding the bluestone building was renovated with a view to becoming a creative hub. The cream brick building was left unfinished. Substantial work remains to complete the site.

The Co-Op developed plans to bring to fruition a community operated town square complex and lodged an Expression of Interest to manage the site.

After being short-listed for Head Tennant/Lead Operator of the site the Co-op made a further submission in March 2026. A decision by the state Government is imminent.

The Co-Op will continue to advocate for Kyneton and District residents to have a town centre that brings us together, supports residents, and that we can be proud of.
